Chester Makes a Statement, Defeats Strath Haven 22–10 in Week 1
Chester visited Strath Haven on Friday night for a highly anticipated District 1 Week 1 showdown — and it didn't disappoint.
The game started with chaos.
On the opening kickoff, Chester fumbled the football and Strath Haven recovered, giving the Panthers an immediate opportunity. But on the ensuing possession, Strath Haven fumbled the snap and Chester recovered, giving the ball right back to the Clippers.
That sequence set the tone for a physical first quarter dominated by defense.
Neither offense could get much going early as both defenses played fast and aggressive. Chester's Zyon Santana was a constant presence in the backfield, helping disrupt Strath Haven's rushing attack. On the other side, Cole Haley made his presence felt immediately for the Panthers with multiple tackles and tackles for loss.
After one quarter, the game remained scoreless at 0–0.
Chester Takes Control
The Clippers began to take over in the second quarter, and freshman running back Sa'Mhad Williams provided the breakthrough.
Williams hit the hole hard and exploded for a 33-yard touchdown run, outrunning the Strath Haven defense to put Chester on the board. The Clippers converted the two-point attempt to take an 8–0 lead.
A few minutes later, Chester's defense delivered another huge play.
Sekai Brown-Murray intercepted Strath Haven quarterback Jake Plunkett and returned the ball all the way to the Panthers' 4-yard line. Chester capitalized on the turnover, with senior Zyon Santana eventually punching in a 9-yard touchdown run to extend the Clippers' advantage to 16–0.
Strath Haven managed to get on the scoreboard before halftime when kicker Matt Steyer connected on a 29-yard field goal, sending the Panthers into the locker room trailing 16–3.
Strath Haven Fights Back
Strath Haven came out of halftime firing.
The Panthers put together a strong drive into the red zone, where they eventually faced a crucial fourth down. Plunkett delivered, finding senior wide receiver Jalen Starr in the back of the end zone for an excellent touchdown catch.
The score cut Chester's lead to 16–10 midway through the third quarter, and suddenly the Panthers were right back in the game.
Chester appeared to answer immediately with a kickoff return for a touchdown, but the play was called back because of an illegal block in the back.
Later in the drive, John Reilly intercepted Chester quarterback Kenjai Gatling, giving Strath Haven an opportunity to take the lead.
The Panthers drove all the way to the Chester 10-yard line. Midway through the fourth quarter, Strath Haven faced a huge fourth down with a chance to keep the drive alive. Plunkett looked for senior tight end Tyler Slaughter in the back of the end zone, but the two couldn't connect.
Chester took over on downs on its own 10-yard line.
Then Sa'Mhad Williams took over the game.
A Freshman Finishes It
Pinned deep in its own territory and protecting a six-point lead, Chester needed a drive.
Williams gave them one.
The freshman accounted for all 90 yards on Chester's ensuing possession, carrying the Clippers down the field before finishing the drive with his second touchdown of the night.
It was an emphatic ending to an outstanding varsity performance from the freshman running back.
His performance earned him PA East Sports Media Player of the Game honors as Chester closed out an impressive 22–10 Week 1 victory.

I'll be the first to admit it: I was completely wrong about this game.
PA East picked Strath Haven coming into Friday night because of the Panthers' senior-heavy, experienced roster and the amount of production Chester had to replace from last season.
Chester had no problem filling those shoes.
The Clippers looked physical, athletic and confident on both sides of the football. If Week 1 was any indication, this is once again a dangerous Chester team.
Watch out for the Clippers.
Chester will look to carry that momentum into Week 2 when they travel to George Washington.
Kenjai Gatling — QB
Gatling had a very impressive first game of the season. He looked comfortable in the pocket, delivered accurate throws, sensed pressure well and showed the ability to escape when necessary. He also consistently made good decisions with the football.
Gatling and Sekai Brown-Murray already appear to have strong chemistry. That QB/WR combination is one to watch as the season progresses.
Sekai Brown-Murray — WR/DB
Brown-Murray made an impact on both sides of the football. Offensively, he hauled in several big receptions for chunk yardage, including an impressive catch over the middle where he absorbed a hard hit and still held onto the football.
Defensively, he came up with one of the biggest plays of the game, intercepting Plunkett and returning it all the way to Strath Haven's 4-yard line to set up a Chester touchdown.
Chester Defensive Line
Chester's defensive line was outstanding. The Clippers consistently stuffed the run and disrupted plays in the backfield, largely shutting down what Strath Haven traditionally wants to do best — run the football.
The battle in the trenches was one of the biggest reasons Chester walked away with the victory.
Chester Offensive Line
The big guys up front deserve plenty of credit as well.
Vanel Malendez, Shane McLain, Jacoby Roman, Solomon Dodson, Vegas Battle and Eron Tull paved the way for a huge night on the ground.
The Chester offensive line consistently created running lanes for Williams and Santana and controlled the line of scrimmage when it mattered most.
Zyon Santana
Santana was all over the field. He finished with 69 rushing yards and a touchdown offensively while repeatedly finding his way into the Strath Haven backfield on defense.
Whether carrying the football or disrupting plays on the other side, Santana made his presence felt throughout the night.
Sa'Mhad Williams — RB, Freshman
What a performance.
Williams ran for 187 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns, including the 33-yard score that opened the scoring and the game-sealing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Most impressive was Chester's final 90-yard scoring drive, where Williams accounted for every yard of the possession.
The scary part for the rest of District 1? He's only a freshman.
Williams was named the PA East Sports Media Player of the Game.
STRATH HAVEN
The final score doesn't tell the entire story for Strath Haven.
The Panthers battled back from a 16–0 deficit and drove all the way to Chester's 10-yard line in the fourth quarter with an opportunity to potentially take the lead.
Ultimately, Chester made the plays it needed to make down the stretch.
Strath Haven will look to regroup in Week 2 when it travels to Penncrest.
Jalen Starr — WR
Starr had a strong night for the Panthers, finishing with 3 receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown.
His biggest play came on fourth down when he hauled in Plunkett's pass in the back of the end zone for Strath Haven's only touchdown of the night.
He also contributed defensively, playing aggressively and providing solid coverage.
Landon Barlow — RB
Barlow was Strath Haven's workhorse on the ground.
He finished with 133 rushing yards on 22 carries, breaking off several strong runs and consistently fighting for additional yardage.
Barlow also contributed on defense and was one of Strath Haven's biggest difference-makers throughout the night.
